Stop Press - Scheme Extended

A £100 million increase to the popular vehicle scrappage scheme has been announced, bringing its total budget to £400 million. If you use the scheme, you can get £2,000 off a new car or van when you trade in an old one.

Eight-year-old vans now eligible
Vans eight years old (instead of ten previously) are now eligible under the extended scheme. To qualify, a van must have been registered by 28 February 2002 or earlier. This means a Y registration or earlier, or new style number plates where the third and fourth digits of the registration number are '51'.
Car owners also get a boost, with the age qualification changed by six months to extend the benefits to cars registered on or before 29 February 2000 (a V registration).
To date 227,750 orders have been placed through the scheme. The extra funding enables the scheme to support a further 100,000 vehicles. This will cover up to 400,000 vehicles in total. The scheme will come to an end on 28 February 2010 or when the funding runs out, whichever is sooner.

How the scheme works
Of the £2,000 discount, half comes from the government and half from the manufacturer. Dealers complete the paperwork for motorists who take part in the scheme and arrange for the old vehicle to be scrapped. The dealer checks that the vehicle being traded in and the new one being bought qualify under the scheme.
Business Secretary Lord Mandelson said: “The scrappage scheme has delivered a boost to manufacturers and the supply chain. We have listened to the concerns of manufacturers and are increasing the funding of the scheme to £400 million.” He added that the help on offer is targeted, limited and proportionate, and not a blank cheque to car manufacturers.
